You can use small stick pins, nails or even small screw drivers to transfer patterns. Anything that is comfortable and has a small point.

When you light up your carving, you want the image to be smooth. So, it helps to trim the inner edge of your carving. Sometimes, you can just scrape the edges.

I found using sewing perferator wheels are good for straight lines in your pattern.
Just roll the wheel slowly along pattern line.

Sometimes, you get thin areas that as your melon decays may loose its strength. I found that if you break a toothpick and stick it in the weak part, you can tack it to a stronger area. That will give your carving a little more life. Pumpkins can last a week or longer. Watermelons only last 2 or 3 days, depending on thickness of pieces in carving and temperature.
